There are currently over 1800 Physician Assistants practicing in the state of Maryland. Ninety percent of these are located in the Baltimore and Washington, DC suburban areas. Additional data is available. Maryland has a very good practice act, and its physicians and PAs enjoy a fair degree of practice autonomy. If you are a physician interested in hiring a physician assistant, you should know the differences in hiring a physician assistant versus a nurse practitioner.

Healthcare in Maryland is among the best in the country with a number of renowned institutions and one of the highest per capita ratio of physicians in the United States. If you're thinking about moving to Maryland, you may want to review our website to find out more about our state and its laws. Maryland is a wonderful place to live and work. Our job bank is for members only, but out of state PAs who are listed in the AAPA directory as residing in a non-contiguous state may request the job bank listing for a nominal fee.
If you are interested in applying for a certification (PAs are not yet licensed in Maryland) from the state regulatory agency, the Maryland Board of Physicians, you may download a license application . After you have your certificate, and once you obtain a position, you must file a Delegation Agreement before beginning work. This agreement spells out the working conditions under which you practice; primarily your level of supervision and intervention. After downloading a Delegation Agreement , you and your supervising physician should fill out the appropriate sections and return it as directed. Note that there is a deadline near the end of each month for filing your agreement. See our calendar for a list of deadlines. The date of official approval is generally the fourth Wednesday of the month following the submission deadline.

N.B. It takes at least a month (even if you already have a position) before you can work in Maryland! Make plans accordingly. For further info see Credentialing in Maryland.
