Credentialing a Physician Assistant
Once you find your physician assistant and have decided on salary and benefits for the position, the two of you must credential the PA in the state of Maryland. (a printable <%'checklist%>checklist (coming soon) is available for your reference). The entire process may take from 1 to 2 months, depending on dates, so plan ahead!
  1. Certification
PAs are not licensed but CERTIFIED in Maryland. If not already certified, the PA must obtain certification in Maryland before preceeding. Please read the application and instructions for further info. The fee is $204.50. Certification applications may be submiited at the same time as delegation agreements although any paperwork errors will delay approval. New graduates (who are waiting to take their boards or awaiting results) may apply for temporary certification. Temporary certificate holders may not prescribe. Certification is renewed every two years. There are CME requirements to meet certification.
  2. Delegation Agreement
A delegation agreement is a definition of the working arrangement between the physician and the PA. Please read the application and instructions for further info. The fee is $200.00 for all agreements. Applications submitted after the deadline receiving date for any particular month will wait until the following month for review and approval. After receipt, the agreement is reviewed first by the PA Advisory Committee (who makes recommendations) and then about one month later by the full Board at their meeting. Please refer to the calendar of close-out dates in order to be aware of when to file. Physicians may supervise no more than two PAs at a time (unless they are employed in a hospital, correctional or public health facility). If on vacation, physicians in private practice must delegate an alternate supervising physician if they intend for the PA to continue to practice. Supervision is defined as "being available" NOT "being there". When filling out your delegation agreement read it carefully. The most common errors which result in rejection or return of a delegation agreement are:
    • Failure to completely fill out an area of the application
    • Failure to sign in all places
    • Vague or incomplete documentation
  3. Prescriptive Practice
For infomation on prescribing see Prescribing in Maryland.
  4. Approval
The written approval of the delegation agreement will be mailed to both the PA and the supervising physician within about one week of the Board meeting (if approved). You will generally be contacted prior to the meeting if there are problems with your delegation agreement. If you have questions, contact Noel Spindler at the Board of Physicians (410) 764-4768.
  5. Ending an Agreement
If your PA leaves your practice for any reason, it is mandatory that you notify the Board within 10 days if the reason is routine and within 5 days if the reson is related to quality of care. Please read the termination form and instructions for further info.
