Prescribing in Maryland
PAs may prescribe
all non-controlled substances in Maryland as soon as their delegation agreement
is approved (see calendar
of closeout dates for Delegation Agreement approval dates) but may not prescribe
controlled substances until they have both a CDS
number from the state as well as a DEA
number. PAs: Make sure that your physician has requested prescriptive practice
on your Delegation Agreement. To register to prescribe controlled substances,
practitioners in Maryland must register with the Maryland DHMH
-State Division of Drug Control before obtaining a registration with the DEA.
In actuality, you can apply for both simultaneously but the DEA will not be approved
until after the CDS registration is completed.
CDS
registration will cost $60.00 and must be renewed every 2 years. The CDS registration
number is not placed on prescriptions, and in fact, is never used in writing prescriptions.
Turnaround time is about 3 weeks. There is no web site link to the Maryland DHMH
-State Division of Drug Control. Their address is 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore,
MD 21215. Please call (410) 764-2890 to request an application be mailed to you.
DEA
registration will cost $390.00 and must be renewed every 3 years. Your DEA number
must be written on all prescriptions for controlled substances. It will take about
4 weeks to receive your number. To apply for a DEA number, see their website.
Hospital PAs may utilize their hospital DEA number if they have one, but must
attach a modifier (assigned by the hospital) to indicate their identity. Pharmacists
will accept hospital DEA numbers. Hospital DEA numbers are unique to the facility
and may not be used if you are writing a prescription elsewhere. PAs who work
at mulitple facilities would be well advised to obtain their own DEA number.
Orders
written in a chart in the hospital are medication orders and do not require a
prescription. Prescriptions are filled at a pharmacy. Remember! In addition to
your signature, all prescriptions which you write must have: - Your printed
name
- The printed name of your physician
- Office or facility phone number
- Prescriptions for controlled substances must also have your DEA number.
