Maryland offers a great deal for PAs, from both a lifestyle as well as a practice perspective. If you are considering moving to Maryland, these links may be helpful to you.

Maryland is a small state of 9,774 square miles and just over 5 million people, it stretches from the Alleghany mountains in the west to the Atlantic coast. It is bordered by West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia. Maryland is the primary land mass surrounding the ecologically rich Chesapeake bay and its largest city, Baltimore (nicknamed: Charm City) sits at the head of this estuary. The capital of Maryland is Annapolis, which is located on the Chesapeake Bay. Annapolis is also home to the the United States Naval Academy. While the District of Columbia is separate (it sits on land ceded by Maryland in the late 1700s) from the state, a large number of Maryland PAs work in or live in the city or suburbs of Washington, D.C. Marylanders often vacation on the Eastern Shore and its beaches. The Chesapeake Bay bridge allows for easy access to the shore and most citizens are no more than three hours away from the shore. Maryland also has a wealth of parks and historical sites, for more information see the links at left.
Practicing in Maryland is fairly receptive for PAs. Due to recent legislative changes, Maryland has one of the better practice acts in the country. Maryland PAs are authorized to prescribe for all medications (including Schedule II-V) without restriction. There are no procedural "laundry lists" and supervision is defined as per AAPA recommendations. There are several exemplary health care institutions in Maryland including Johns Hopkins and the National Institute of Health and a large number of excellent specialtists are available for referral. Maryland's Medbank program provides medication for chronically ill or under/uninsured patients. For more information about Health Care in Maryland see our site.
